Teen Alcoholism/Teen Alcohol Abuse

Underage Drinking

Alcohol use by persons under age 21 years is a major public health problem. Alcohol is the most commonly used and abused drug among youth in the United States, more than tobacco and illicit drugs. Although drinking by persons under the age of 21 is illegal, people aged 12 to 20 years drink 11% of all alcohol consumed in the United States. More than 90% of this alcohol is consumed in the form of binge drinks. On average, underage drinkers consume more drinks per drinking occasion than adult drinkers. In 2008, there were approximately 190,000 emergency rooms visits by persons under age 21 for injuries and other conditions linked to alcohol.

Consequences of Underage Drinking
School problems, such as higher absence and poor or failing grades.
Social problems, such as fighting and lack of participation in youth activities.
Legal problems, such as arrest for driving or physically hurting someone while drunk.
Physical problems, such as hangovers or illnesses.
Unwanted, unplanned, and unprotected sexual activity.
Disruption of normal growth and sexual development.
Physical and sexual assault.
Higher risk for suicide and homicide.
Alcohol-related car crashes and other unintentional injuries, such as burns, falls, and drowning.
Memory problems.
Abuse of other drugs.
Changes in brain development that may have life-long effects.
Death from alcohol poisoning.
In general, the risk of youth experiencing these problems is greater for those who binge drink than for those who do not binge drink.

Teen Alcoholism Treatment/Teen Alcohol Rehab

Adolescent and Alcohol Use and Abuse

Alcohol has a negative impact on health. Alcohol can damage every organ in the body, including your child's developing brain. It impacts motor coordination, impulse control, memory, and judgment.

In addition to its negative impact on health, alcohol use among youth is strongly correlated with violence, risky sexual behavior, poor academic performance, alcohol-related driving incidents, and other harmful behaviors. Alcohol use also is linked with youthful deaths by drowning, suicide, and homicide.

Teenagers start using alcohol for many reasons. They might be pressured by friends at a parties or in many cases they are self medicating to cope with feelings of depression. Whatever the reason may be some teens develop an alcohol dependency and will need treatment.

Adolescent Alcoholism Rehabilitation << back to top
There are many types of alcohol addiction treatment for teens. Treatment types are determined by the adolescent's level of use and other mental health and medical issues.

Detoxification, short-term and long-term rehabilitation, intensive outpatient programs, 12-step programs and individual, family and group therapy are all forms of alcohol addiction treatment. Some types of treatment such as detoxification may last one week whereas other such as long-term, residential alcoholism treatment can last 30 days or longer.

Each type of alcohol addiction treatment has its own advantages. Including parents in the teen’s alcoholism treatment is critical to success, so a good alcohol rehab includes parents and family in their addiction therapy programs . Detoxification might be needed if the teen is heavily dependent on alcohol.

When choosing a teen alcohol treatment program, it's important to ensure that the program is specifically for teens due to their developmental needs. Also, if the teen has mental health issues, the facility should be able to treat them at the same time. Some adolescent teen rehabs provide along side addiction treatment an educational program which will help your child in keeping their school credits while away from home in treatment.

Teen Drug Rehab Centers can guide you in the right direction in choosing an adolescent rehabilitation center that will provide the treatment and therapies specifically related to your child’s needs. If your doctor has recommended that your teen stay in an inpatient/residential addiction treatment program, we can help you get admitted. Give us a call at 1-888-610-2046 and we will help identify the most suitable treatment program for your child.

Remember, as parents, the earlier you start talking to your child about drinking, the more influence you may have on their values and decisions. Several short conversations are better than one long lecture.
